Are you familiar with GoBoard from Johns Manville? This revolutionary new product is available at Tile Outlets of America.
To help you evaluate GoBoard and better understand what makes it stand out, we caught up with Gary Tuhro from the Sarasota store. In this article, Gary describes the product, explains how best to use it, and provides perspective on how it differs from comparable products.
Introducing GoBoard Waterproof Tile Backer Board
TOA: What is GoBoard?
GT: GoBoard is an ultra-lightweight waterproof, and durable backer board. Due to it being so lightweight, it is easier to carry, cut, and install.
TOA: How does it differ from cement and backer options?
GT: GoBoard is up to 80% lighter than cement boards.
What that means is that one person can carry multiple boards at a time.
It's also easier to maneuver and position GoBoard for installation. In addition, it can be cut right where it is being installed without crumbling or creating a mess.
TOA: Where can you use GoBoard?
GT: GoBoard can be used for walls, showers, floors, countertops, ceilings, shelves, benches, and tub surrounds. Just be sure to use the proper thickness board for the the end use installation you have in mind.
TOA: In what sizes and thicknesses is GoBoard available?
GT: GoBoard comes in both 3’x5’ and 4’x8’ size sheets.
GoBoard is also available in (6) distinct thicknesses depending on the tile installation project you're working on.
For example:
- For floors and countertops, ¼” thickness is available.
- When it comes to walls, showers, ceilings and floors, you have the option of ½” thick GoBoard.
- The 5/8” thickness works for walls, showers, ceilings, and floors.
- For benches, tub surrounds, walls, vanities and also countertops, 1”, 1 ½”, and 2” thicknesses are available.
TOA: What materials and tools do you need for installation?
GT: To install GoBoard, you'll need GoBoard galvanized fasteners in the proper thickness depending on the size of the board you've selected, and joint sealant.
These products will need to be properly applied to successfully hang and waterproof the boards.
From a tools perspective, you'll want to have the following readily available:
- A utility knife
- Pencil
- Straight edge
- Measuring tape
- Putty knife
- Galvanized backer board screws
- Caulk gun.
TOA: Gary, how do you install GoBoard?
GT: First, measure each board and cut to size.
Next, as Johns Manville explains on its site:
“...apply a liberal continuous bead of GoBoard sealant to the bottom (walls) or side (for ceilings) edge so that when it is butted the sealant squeezes out.
Ensure a tight joint seal leaving a 1/8” gap”.
Fasten GoBoard flush to the studs using the GoBoard fasteners.
It is very important when fastening to space the screws no more than 8” apart, and install within ½’’ to 1” on the perimeter.
*Note: If an alternative fastener is used, the max spacing is 6” apart.
Once the boards are fastened, spread the excess sealant with putty knife to 1” beyond each side of the joint.
Also apply sealant to all fasteners and corners to ensure a watertight seal.
TOA: How do you cut GoBoard?
GT: You can use a utility knife to cut GoBoard.
TOA: What limitations should you be aware of for installation?
GT: It is very important to use the proper thickness of GoBoard for the desired project.
It is also very important to have a clear understanding of the bonding and sealing instructions for each (wall, ceiling, bench, vanity or floor application).
TOA: Gary, what reactions have contractors had in response to GoBoard?
GT: Contractors and Trade Pros who have used GoBoard love this product.
They appreciate the time they save transporting, cutting, and installing, and waterproofing this lightweight product.
