Have you considered picket tile, fish scales, and other fun shaped tiles for your next backsplash design? In case you haven't, you'll enjoy this article. It's filled with inspiring images and tile suggestions for your next project.

Picket, Fish Scale, Subway, White Geometric Patterns, and Porcelain Tile Backsplash Ideas

Picket Backsplash Ideas

Let's start with pickets. Yes, picket shapes as in a picket fence. Imagine taking a subway tile shape and adding triangles to each end, making the shape more whimsical and fun, not to mention ideal for a space such as a backsplash where fun makes a difference.

Picket tile makes for a wonderful backsplash.

Here's a kitchen featuring a ceramic picket backsplash installed horizontally. The tile is glossy in texture and creates that nice sheen. Here are three other picket options for you:

The Snow Pearlescent Picket Glass Mos 14x10 – SKU: 152759 is a combination of marble and glass.

The Alps Bianco Polished Picket Mos 11x18 – SKU: 152547 is a porcelain picket. This is available in matte and polished finishes.

To create this look in a marble you can use Imperial White Marble Picket Mos 12x12 – SKU: 306009

Fish Scales Backsplash Ideas

Another whimsical tile shape is the fish scale. You'll find it available in a variety of materials: ceramic, porcelain, marble and travertines.

The backsplash above features a marble design from Tarmak USA with a variegated design giving you depth of color. The finish looks to be honed or polished, which gives you that slight shine.

As with pickets, fish scale designs can be installed in either direction - whichever suits the design better. Explore them both and see which one you like better.

You can special order fish scale tile such as Dolomite, Iceberg & Vanilla Polished at Tile Outlets of America. For a low maintenance option you can use a ceramic scales mosaic. These are available in white, grey and a Carrara look.

Featured below is White Matte Carrara Scales Mosaic 9x10 – SKU: 152301 at Tile Outlets of America.

White Geometric Pattern Backsplash Ideas

White backsplashes in kitchens are very popular. These type of geometric patterns give you dimension and visual interest. You can achieve this look with diamonds and squares.

If you are trying to stay with the minimalist look, the white is a nice clean modern choice. But if you want to explore the geometric design with some color or sparkle, we have some other choices.

The Glitz 3D Square Glass Mosaic 12x12 is a great alternative. This is a glass mosaic with a 3D effect. Three colors available in this design to complement color choices in your countertops. I am sure one of these choices will work.

The Faceted Glass Blend mosaics are another geometric design with a 3D effect. The colors choices are three and you can see in the design a dimension to the design in the glass.

If you want to create this diamond design with marble/travertine. We have a few options for this in our clipped diamond designs. These are marble mosaics.

There are many other options for this type of mosaic for colors to explore via special order.

Here's an article that goes into depth about the variety of mosaic shapes to Explore the Wonders of Mosaic Shapes with Kate.

Subway Backsplash Ideas

Subway tiles are a classic for backsplashes given their versatility in many applications across the years.

In these two images, notice how a simple 3x6 ceramic white subway creates this exciting design with an alternating pattern. Delightfully simple, and so versatile depending on your choice of materials, colors and patterns to create just the right level of splash to your space.

Featured in the kitchen is the Natural Branco Glossy ceramic 3x6 – SKU: 204245. Other options to create this look include doing so with a glass mosaic.

The Metro Bevel White 3x6 Glass Mos 12x12 – SKU: 151717. This mosaic is offset, but not to say you can’t take it apart and individually install in like the picture above.

Another favorite is the Oyster White 2x4 Glass Mos 12x12 – SKU: 152749. This glass mosaic has a shimmering effect mimicking that Oyster look.

With a subway tile shape, you can create a multitude of patterns. The herringbone design is another subway idea where you can take the 3x6 ceramic tiles and make a different design than what is featured above.

Or you get a mosaic in the herringbone design and use this for your inspiration. White Glossy Herringbone Porcelain Mosaic 11x11 – SKU: 152319

Porcelain/Ceramic Backsplash Ideas

The subway tile featured in this kitchen is a porcelain/ceramic subway look. I like the uniform look of this type of tile. You can find many different options or you can have a tile you like cut down to size to make the backsplash.

Come explore some porcelain subway tiles:

The Boulevard 4x12 ceramic wall tile is a simple subway line with uniformity.

The Village series is available in three colors and comes in a 4x16 ceramic subway tile. This series has more variation in the tiles from one to the other.

Bathroom Backsplash Ideas

Backsplashes don’t always need to be in the kitchen. They are equally ideas for bathrooms.

This bathroom has a beautiful 3x12 subway tile as a backsplash.

Notice the contrast between the two walls where the same subway tile is used, installed in two different manners. The neutral color is a nice complement to the countertop.

The subways were installed in a herringbone design on the wall above the vanity and then the subways were turned in the shower to go horizontally. You can achieve this look with any subway tiles and in all different sizes.

You'll find many subway tiles at Tile Outlets of America to select that are similar to this design. These looks are available in ceramic, porcelain, glass and travertine.

If you are not able to find the look you want, you can select what's available via special order from our top vendors.

Laundry Room Backsplash

Why not bring some life to the laundry room with a backsplash! It's waiting for you to design it.

This laundry room features a stone penny round mosaic. The mosaic is made up of different marbles to create the shade variation. Penny rounds are available in solids or mixed colors/materials to create the design effect you want to achieve.

Here are some penny rounds to create this look:

Blue Marble Penny w/Dot Glass Mos 12x12 – SKU: 152677

Grey Blend Penny Round Mosaic 12x12 – SKU: 152453

If you want to keep the design simple, with solid colors there are options for that too. Here you will see the Royal Blue Glossy 1" Penny Mos 12x12 – SKU: 152371
