What's the difference between modified and unmodified thinset?
Modified thinset has polymer additives for stronger bonds and flexibility — the default for most tile over most substrates. Unmodified thinset cures by hydration and is required over some membranes, like Schluter DITRA and KERDI, per the manufacturer's warranty.
What is LHT mortar and do I need it?
LHT stands for large and heavy tile. It's a non-slump mortar you can build up to full coverage under big tile without lippage. Use it for any tile 15 inches or longer on a side.
Can I use thinset instead of mastic for a backsplash?
Yes — thinset works everywhere mastic does, plus wet areas and floors where mastic doesn't. Mastic is just more convenient for small dry-area wall jobs.
How much thinset does a 50 lb bag cover?
Roughly 40–90 sq ft depending on trowel size and tile — a 1/4" notch covers more area than the 1/2" notch big tile requires. Check the bag's coverage chart for your trowel.
