Floors: prioritize grip

For shower pans and bathroom floors, look for porcelain or stone with a textured or matte finish and a higher slip rating. Smaller mosaics on a shower floor add grout lines that improve traction and conform to the slope of the drain.

Walls & showers: go bigger

Large-format and slab-look porcelain on shower walls means fewer grout lines to clean and a calmer, more spa-like result. Subway and zellige-look tile remain the most versatile choice for a timeless, budget-friendly wall.

Small bathrooms: scale and light

• Light, glossy wall tile bounces light and visually expands a tight space.
• Running large-format tile to the ceiling draws the eye up.
• One bold accent — a patterned floor or a niche in mosaic — adds personality without overwhelming.
