Shop Tile Backer Board: Cement, Fiber & Foam Panels

Backer board gives tile a rigid, moisture-stable substrate that drywall can't. This collection carries the three main families: USG Durock cement board, Fiberock fiber-reinforced panels, and lightweight waterproof foam boards from Johns Manville GoBoard and Schluter Kerdi-Board — plus the screws, washers, and mesh tape to install them right.

Choosing a Backer Board

  • Cement board (Durock) — the rugged, economical standard for floors and walls.
  • Fiber panels (Fiberock) — smooth, score-and-snap installation with no mesh surface.
  • Foam boards (GoBoard, Kerdi-Board) — featherweight, waterproof out of the box, ideal for showers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tile directly over drywall instead of backer board?
Only in dry areas like a backsplash. In showers, tub surrounds, and floors, use backer board — drywall loses strength when wet and won't hold tile long-term.
Cement board vs. foam board — which should I use?
Cement board (Durock) is rugged and economical but needs a separate waterproofing layer in wet areas. Foam boards (GoBoard, Kerdi-Board) are waterproof out of the box, a quarter of the weight, and cut with a utility knife — you pay more per sheet but skip the membrane step on walls.
Do backer board seams need treatment?
Yes. Cement and fiber boards get alkali-resistant mesh tape bedded in thinset. GoBoard seams get GoBoard Pro Sealant; Kerdi-Board seams get KERDI-BAND or KERDI-FIX in wet areas.
What screws do I use for backer board?
Corrosion-resistant backer board screws made for the material — Durock screws for cement board, GoBoard fasteners for GoBoard, and Kerdi-Board screws with washers for Kerdi-Board. Drywall screws will corrode and fail.
