Is tile waterproof by itself?
No. Tile and cement grout both pass water vapor and some liquid water. In showers and wet areas, a waterproofing membrane behind or beneath the tile is what actually keeps water out of the wall and floor assembly.
Sheet membrane or liquid membrane — which should I use?
Sheet systems like Schluter KERDI give a consistent, immediately tileable layer and are the shower standard. Liquid membranes like TEC HydraFlex roll on fast over floors, curbs, and complex shapes, and most add crack isolation. Many pros use both on one job.
Do I need KERDI-BAND and preformed corners?
Yes — seams, corners, and penetrations are where showers leak. Band every seam and change of plane, use preformed inside/outside corners, and seal valves and pipes with KERDI-SEAL gaskets.
Can I tile the same day I waterproof?
With sheet membranes, yes — tile as soon as the membrane is set. Liquid membranes need to cure between coats and before tiling; check the product's flash times, typically 1–3 hours per coat.
