Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pencil liner?
A pencil liner is a narrow, rounded strip of stone, ceramic, glass, or metal — usually around 1/2 to 3/4 inch tall — used to frame tile fields, cap wainscoting, outline niches, and separate two different tiles with a clean line.
Where should I use pencil liner in a shower?
The most common spots are framing the niche, capping an accent band at eye level, and finishing the top edge of the tiled surround. It's a small line item that makes the whole shower look custom.
Can pencil liners be used with any tile?
Yes — they're set in the same mortar bed as the field tile. Just keep the liner thickness close to your tile thickness so the faces sit flush.
