How to choose the right tile

Almost every tile decision comes down to four questions: where is it going, how much water and traffic will it see, what look are you after, and what does it cost installed. Here is how we walk customers through it in the store.

1. Start with where the tile is going

A tile that is perfect on a backsplash can be the wrong call on a shower floor. Floors need hardness and slip resistance. Walls can trade durability for looks, which is why thin, glossy and hand-glazed tiles live there. Shower floors want small formats or mosaics, because more grout joints mean more grip and an easier slope to the drain. Outdoor and pool areas in Florida need frost-tolerant, low-absorption porcelain or stone with a textured surface.

2. Pick the material

Material sets the durability, the maintenance and most of the price. This is the short version of a conversation our tile specialists have a hundred times a week.

3. Read the two ratings that actually matter

PEI rates surface wear. PEI 1–2 is wall-only, PEI 3 suits normal residential floors, PEI 4–5 handles heavy residential and commercial traffic. DCOF rates wet slip resistance; look for 0.42 or higher on any floor that gets wet, including bathrooms, entries, lanais and pool decks. Water absorption is the third number worth knowing: at or below 0.5% is true porcelain, which is what makes it safe outdoors. Every spec we hold for a tile is on its product page.

4. Choose the size and the look

Large-format tile (anything with a side over 15") means fewer grout lines and a calmer, larger-feeling room — 12x24 and 24x48 are the workhorses. Plank tile in 6x36, 8x48 and similar runs gives you a wood floor that can be hosed off. Classic 3x6 subway is still the cheapest way to make a bathroom look finished, and mosaics do the detail work in niches, shower floors and feature bands. Looks are printed and pressed so well now that porcelain convincingly imitates marble, travertine, oak, concrete and terrazzo at a fraction of the price and none of the maintenance.

5. Work out how much tile to buy

Measure the length and width of each area, multiply for square footage, add the areas together, then add 10% for a straight lay and 15% for a diagonal, herringbone or patterned lay to cover cuts, breakage and future repairs. Tile is made in dye lots, so a box bought next year will not match — buying the overage up front is far cheaper than re-tiling a room. 6. Do not forget what goes under and around it

A tile order is not finished at the tile. You will need setting material, grout, and usually waterproofing and trim. We stock the whole job so you are not driving to a second store mid-project.
