Short answer: On a Florida slab, porcelain tile is the most moisture-tolerant, longest-lasting floor. Rigid-core SPC vinyl is the best lower-cost, softer-underfoot option. Use engineered hardwood only where the slab passes the manufacturer's moisture limits and you install the required vapor barrier.

Test the slab first: the two standard moisture tests
- ASTM F2170 (in-situ relative humidity): probes go into holes drilled into the slab and read the relative humidity (%RH) inside the concrete.
- ASTM F1869 (calcium chloride): a dish of anhydrous calcium chloride sits under a sealed dome on the bare slab and measures the moisture vapor emission rate (pounds per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours).
The two tests measure different things, and you can't convert one result into the other. ASTM doesn't set pass/fail limits. The flooring or adhesive manufacturer does, so use the test and the limit their installation instructions name.

FAQ
Do I need to moisture-test a Florida slab?
Most flooring and adhesive manufacturers require it. Use the test their instructions specify (ASTM F2170 or F1869).
Which moisture test is better?
Neither is universally better. They measure different things. Follow the manufacturer's required method.
Can tile go directly on a slab?
Generally yes, with the right thinset and slab prep. Crack-prone slabs may need an uncoupling membrane.
Is LVP OK on concrete?
Yes. Rigid SPC is common on Florida slabs. Follow the maker's moisture and underlayment requirements.
